FKA twigs

For my Warner Music Group Emerging Talent Associate capstone, the artist I chose to present on is FKA twigs.

The first time I remember hearing an FKA twigs song was in April 2019, when I was 12, when the cellophane song and music video premiered. I was purely a fan of typical pop music then, but I stumbled upon the video on YouTube as one of those recommendations that popped up. I remember being obsessed with binge-watching music videos because they combined my two favorite art forms, music and visuals, and brought them to life.

Her ability to blend so many different genres, visuals, and sounds makes her music feel like a mix of ’90s Madonna, ’70s Kraftwerk, and something from 2050 all at once. I feel like I’m constantly discovering something new through her work, whether it’s getting into Massive Attack or finding myself drawn to the same techno clubs in Prague that she mentioned as inspirations for her album Eusexua.

I’ve found that twigs’s success and artistic evolution come from her authenticity and her commitment to staying true to herself rather than conforming to trends or the current landscape. I connect with that deeply because I’ve always admired artists who build their vision from honesty, something I try to bring into my own work too, by staying true to my creativity and strengths.

                                            <image:caption>Finding My Voice

If there’s one thing I could take away from twigs, it’s her ability to find her voice and sense of self not just through her work but through the way she uses her platform. Beyond her advocacy for artists’ rights and her stance against AI exploitation, what inspires me most is how she uses her artistry to create change and empower others to do the same. Her courage in expressing herself through her music has inspired me to find my own courage and voice in my work. Since joining Warner, I’ve seen how much I’ve grown by learning to introduce new ideas and contribute my creative perspective to the catalog team.

A lot of her work has been about doing the complete opposite of the norm, so even when pitching creative ideas here, I’ve felt that those out-of-the-box ideas still have value and meaning, just as they do in her work. Pushing for my own voice and adding my own spin on things has been one of the most impactful parts of my time here, and knowing that my ideas and input actually make an impact has meant everything.
<image:caption>Creativity

Visual mediums have always been so important to me. I still remember when Lady Gaga liked a tweet I posted in 2020 with a graphic design edit I made for her song “Stupid Love,” and that was my “I made it” moment for 13-year-old me. Back then, designing concept albums and visuals was how I connected most with the music I loved. Some of my biggest design inspirations have come from artists including FKA twigs, whose visuals and sounds pushed me to imagine how I’d brand their projects as if I were experiencing them for the first time.

Although I’ve since moved past the era of posting visuals online, those projects remain some of my biggest inspirations, and my dedication to creative expression has only continued to grow. A lot of what I’ve found creatively inspiring has been watching twigs translate the raw emotion of her albums into visual form, especially through her live performances. As a fan, it made me want to contribute to that same world of creative strategy and artist identity, so in many ways, those early mock edits and graphics were my way of participating in it. Going forward in the music industry, I want to build on that passion and help craft identities that align authentically with artists’ visions.
</image:caption>

                                            <image:caption>Sziget Festival - Budapest, Hungary 08/09/2025

Three days before my interview with Warner Chappell Music, I was waiting all day to see FKA twigs perform in Budapest, Hungary. It was my seventh day of camping and volunteering at Sziget Festival, so being able to present on her here at WMG feels like a full circle moment.

My time and experience working at at festivals like Sziget and Primavera has shaped how I think about creativity and audience connection. Being surrounded by people who live and breathe music reminded me how powerful experience-based storytelling can be. It’s part of what draws me to creative and brand strategy, where I can help artists and labels build meaningful identities and moments that extend beyond the music. From my background in social media and entertainment marketing to my work on film sets and even for the entrepreneurship center at NYU, I’ve learned how to bring ideas to life through visuals, campaigns, and community engagement. Moving forward, I want to apply those same skills to elevate artist storytelling and connect fans to the art that inspires them most.

Reflecting on that time, just days before meeting Asif Ahmed and Mandy Weiss, who I now get to work closely with on the Global Catalog & Creative Services team, feels like looking at a completely different chapter of my journey in the music industry. I’m so thankful for everything I’ve learned and experienced so far at Warner Music Group, and I can’t wait to keep growing, contributing, and connecting with all the incredible people behind the scenes who help bring some of my favorite artists’ work to life. I’m so incredibly grateful that my first professional experience in the music industry has been at a place that values artistry the way Warner Music Group does. It’s been the most inspiring and exciting environment to learn in, and it’s made me even more excited to continue building a career where I can help shape and celebrate the music that moves people the way FKA twigs’ work moves me.
<image:caption>Artist Advocacy

As a SAG-AFTRA member like twigs, seeing her advocate alongside the union for protections for artists against artificial intelligence has been deeply inspiring. In April 2024, during her Senate testimony in support of the #NoFakesAct, she spoke about the importance of legislative protections for artists and their creative identities.

The SAG-AFTRA strike may have put a pause on my involvement in the entertainment industry, but it also reminded me why I fell in love with it in the first place. It made me want to be part of the change — to better protect creativity, expression, and the people behind the entertainment industry. Seeing artists like twigs use their platforms to push for real protections showed me that advocacy can be just as powerful as artistry itself.

Now, I see my own path in entertainment not just as someone who wants to create, but as someone who wants to champion a voice for all artists, whether they’re behind the camera, in front of it, or somewhere in between. I used to see myself as just an extra in the background, but over time I’ve realized how every person in this industry plays a part in shaping what we see, hear, and feel. My future in the music industry, now from the other side, has shown me that artistry and authentic voices matter more than ever. Seeing twigs speak out and advocate for all creatives has made me appreciate her work even more, knowing she stands for protecting artists, preserving individuality, and championing the voices that make this industry what it is.

Like twigs, my start in the entertainment industry came from the background. I wasn’t, and still am not, a dancer by any means, but I worked almost full-time as a background actor on more productions than I can count from age seven to eighteen, before moving to New York to attend university in 2024. In many ways, my early experience in both film and music taught me how to find my own voice and artistry by stepping out of the background.

In 2020, in the midst of the pandemic, I worked on Disney’s Diary of a Future President for a few consecutive months, pretty much full-time from September to December. I spent all my downtime on set editing graphics, contributing to fan communities on stan Twitter, and supporting my favorite artists online through design and writing. In a way, that was where I started finding my own voice for the things I was passionate about, even if it was through my silly little posts online.

I’m so grateful that my start in the world of entertainment came from being on set and seeing the artistry behind every project, whether it was working with Steven Spielberg for The Fabelmans or appearing in almost every Disney Channel show there was. I credit my creativity and passion for storytelling to those experiences, learning firsthand how entertainment is shaped, even if it was from the sidelines.
<image:caption>From the Background

Before she became one of the most distinctive and forward-thinking artists in music, FKA twigs started her career as a backup dancer, performing behind artists like Jessie J, appearing in the “Price Tag” video (pictured), and working in the background of the very industry she would later redefine.

In her song “Video Girl,” she reflects on those early years as a dancer and her desire to be seen as more than just a face in someone else’s vision.

The camera's on you, ain't that enough?
You're looking for that all 'round good love
So nothing's gonna get in your way
You're gonna get yourself broke one day
Was she the girl that's from the video?

Those lyrics from “Video Girl” mirrored my own experiences growing up as an extra in entertainment, where I was often seen as just another person on set, part of the scene but never the focus. The lines about staying where it’s safe and not pushing for more reminded me of that moment when I started realizing I wanted to contribute to the creative and strategic side of storytelling, and that I couldn’t keep doing only what I’d always known, even if it was all I’d ever been part of.

What I’ve always loved about her is how she never ran from those beginnings. She turned her experience in the background into the start of her individual creative identity, using what she learned to step into her own light.

As I continue to learn and grow from this experience and future opportunities in the music industry, I hope to deepen my passion, knowledge, and connection to the business. With two and a half years left at New York University, I’m eager to keep developing my skills in creative and brand strategy, marketing, and advertising. Whether it’s taking a course like Music Publishing, attending another festival, or spending more time interning in the industry, I know that every way I immerse myself will continue fueling my passion to make an impact and inspiring me with the same excitement I felt when I first watched an FKA twigs video.

Looking ahead, I hope to continue growing within Warner Music Group, building on everything I’ve learned this semester and finding new ways to contribute both creatively and strategically. My experience so far has only strengthened my desire to keep evolving in this space and to keep contributing to the kind of work that inspires me most.
I’ve always loved how music connects people, not just through sound but through the worlds artists build around it. When I was contributing to multiple social media channels, including @PopBase, I would write, tweet, and create content, graphics, and mockups for campaigns and visuals I wanted to see while engaging audiences and fellow fans. Doing that taught me to think critically about music, marketing, and fan engagement, and it made me feel connected to music beyond just the surface level.

A lot of twigs’s work is about experimentation and growth. She takes risks, tries new directions, and stretches what her music and visuals can do, and that’s something I relate to. At Warner Chappell, I’ve loved bringing that same energy to my work. Contributing to the Global Catalog team has given me opportunities to pitch ideas, explore new ways to engage audiences, and think creatively about music strategy. I’ve learned that taking risks and following your own creative vision can have a real impact, and that has been one of the most exciting parts of my experience.
The first time I saw twigs live was in June 2025. I was supposed to see her in April, but I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. It was my first time in Europe, my first international festival, and everything about that night stayed with me.

Seeing her perform made me realize how much her artistry lives beyond the music. The visual storytelling made me fall in love with the industry all over again. Every part of the show felt intentional, from the lighting and movement to how everything flowed together with purpose. It reminded me why I care so deeply about the creative side of music and how powerful visuals can be in shaping an artist’s story.

That night made everything I’ve loved about entertainment make sense. It showed me that what happens behind the scenes can move people just as much as what happens on stage. Even after seeing more than 135 sets this year, that performance still stands out as my favorite and the one that’s had the biggest impact on me because it brought the creativity and artistry I’ve always admired in her to life.
Why twigs?

I’d like to say it was a hard choice choosing an artist to present on because I’m truly drawn to so much of the catalog and so many artists at WMG. But the one who was an instant no-brainer for me was twigs. It’s hard to even put into words everything that draws me to her; it’s like trying to explain to people why my favorite food is olives.

Through and through, I think she’s had a real impact on the journey and path I’ve taken, especially in my career. Last year, when creating my studio art portfolio, I drew great inspiration from the emotions her songs made me feel. There were definitely a lot of factors that led me to move from Los Angeles to attend New York University and pursue my ambitions of contributing to the branding, creativity, and presence of artists. But I think the knowledge that an artist like twigs can have such an influence on what I do and knowing that I, too, can contribute to that same kind of effort has been incredibly motivating. Of course, it’ll never be the same (unless you want some horrible karaoke), but her music in particular has been one of those lasting forces for me.
